ONE UI 9 · UPDATED AUGUST 19, 2026
How to use a Samsung Motion Photo as an animated wallpaper
A Samsung Motion Photo wallpaper brings the brief movement around a camera shot to your Home or Lock screen. Here is the native method, the current device picture, and a reliable fallback when the option does not appear.
On a supported One UI 9 device, open the wallpaper picker, choose a Motion Photo from Gallery, keep its motion enabled in the preview, and apply it to the Home screen, Lock screen, or both. If your phone only treats it as a still image, export the Motion Photo as a video and set that video as wallpaper instead.
What is a Samsung Motion Photo wallpaper?
Motion Photo is a Galaxy Camera feature that records a few seconds around the moment you press the shutter. The saved image still works like a normal photo, but Gallery can play the short movement, let you pick a better frame, or apply effects such as Boomerang. A Samsung Motion Photo wallpaper reuses that embedded movement as an animated phone background.
This is different from Samsung's Dynamic Lock Screen, which rotates downloaded images, and Photo Ambient, which adds weather effects. It is also different from a standard video wallpaper: the source begins as a Motion Photo captured by the Camera app.
NATIVE METHOD
How to set a Motion Photo as wallpaper in One UI 9
Use the built-in method first. It is quicker than converting the file and keeps the original Samsung Motion Photo wallpaper behavior intact. Labels may vary slightly by region or beta build.
- 01
Open Wallpaper and style
Touch and hold an empty area on the Home screen, then choose Wallpaper and style and Change wallpapers. You can also start from the Lock screen wallpaper editor.
- 02
Choose Gallery
Open Gallery from the wallpaper picker and select a picture that was captured with Motion Photo enabled. A regular JPG will not expose the same motion control.
- 03
Review the animation
The preview should play the short clip. If a Motion Photo button is visible, leave it enabled. Reposition or scale the frame so important details are not hidden by the clock or icons.
- 04
Choose where it appears
Apply the Samsung Motion Photo wallpaper to the Home screen, Lock screen, or both when those choices are available on your model.
CURRENT AVAILABILITY
Which Samsung phones support Motion Photo wallpaper?
As of August 17, 2026, Android Authority reported native support on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8. The same report said the feature had not yet been spotted on Galaxy S26 devices running the One UI 9 beta. That makes the software version alone an unreliable compatibility test.
Samsung often rolls features out by model, region, and firmware build. Before assuming your phone is unsupported, install current system and Gallery updates, restart the device, and check the picker again. Samsung Motion Photo wallpaper support can change between beta and stable releases, so we will update this table when broader availability is confirmed.
Why don't I see the Motion Photo wallpaper option?
First, confirm that the picture actually contains motion. Open it in Samsung Gallery and tap View motion photo. If there is no movement, the Camera feature may have been disabled when the shot was taken. Turning it on now will only affect new pictures.
- Update One UI and Gallery. The wallpaper control may arrive through a firmware or app update.
- Start from the wallpaper picker. Sharing a Motion Photo from another app may flatten it into a still image.
- Try Home and Lock screens separately. Availability can differ by screen, model, or build.
- Check the preview toggle. The photo can be selected while its animation remains disabled.
- Use the video route. It works around missing direct support without changing the original photo.
OLDER GALAXY WORKAROUND
Turn a Motion Photo into a video wallpaper
Older phones may still support video wallpaper even when they cannot use the Motion Photo container directly. Open the image in Samsung Gallery, play its motion, then use the menu option to export or save it as a video. Upload that video to Live Wallpaper Maker to trim, fit, or create a Boomerang loop.

Samsung Motion Photo wallpaper FAQ
Can I use a Samsung Motion Photo as wallpaper?
Yes, on Galaxy devices that expose the Motion Photo option in the One UI wallpaper picker. Support depends on your device and software version. If the option is missing, export the Motion Photo as a video and use that file instead.
Which Samsung phones support Motion Photo wallpapers?
Reporting published on August 17, 2026 confirmed the option on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8. It had not yet appeared in the Galaxy S26 One UI 9 beta at that time. Samsung may expand availability in later updates.
Why does my Motion Photo look like a still image?
Check that Motion Photo was enabled when the picture was captured, then look for the Motion Photo animation toggle in the wallpaper preview. The control may not appear on unsupported devices or older One UI versions.
Can I make a live wallpaper from a normal photo?
Yes. A regular photo does not contain a short video, but Live Wallpaper Maker can add a Slow Zoom, Pan, or Pulse effect and export it as a wallpaper-ready MP4.
